“Life as we know it” – through the eyes of Essential Workers Philip Robinson and Anna Barker-Danby”

Life was drastically altered for travelling English couple Philip Robinson and Anna Barker-Danby; who arrived in New Zealand excited to continue their working holiday experience a week before lockdown.

Secured to start a job in the hospitality industry, they were dismayed to find that the jobs they were promised were no longer available due to the current COVID19 situation.

Phil, an experienced Chef and Anna, an Event Manager decided to wait it out to see how the current COVID19 changes would affect their industry and employment opportunities.

As Alert Level 4 was announced, it was clear that the hospitality industry would be heavily affected during this time.

Deciding that they needed to adapt to the current market changes, Phil and Anna were referred to Alignz Recruitment for job opportunities they could use their skills in.

Faster than they both anticipated, Phil and Anna were both offered ongoing employment a week after Alert Level 4 was announced.

“Now we are currently working as Assisting Machine Operators within an essential manufacturing company here in South Auckland” Phil shared.

“Over the last six weeks, initially I found the environment quite different from catering, which I found interesting. And after moving into a machine operating position, I enjoyed being part of a close-knit team, working together and the support that presented. It is definitely different but a good different seeing how industries are working together.”

For the couple, being in a foreign country during a worldwide pandemic; and not knowing many people or having secure employment; it gave both Phil and Anna much needed relief and security to have secured a role so quickly.

“Our experience with Alignz Recruitment was superb from start to now. Onboarding was straight-forward, they were very friendly, and we felt really supported throughout. Currently we are still with Alignz working” Anna shared.

The couple have found working during Lockdown refreshing and safe; and applaud Kiwi’s for their positive attitudes, support and for following the rules put in place for everyone’s safety.

“It was refreshing and reassuring seeing all the Covid-19 safety steps taken in the workplace… We were impressed and reassured by all the safety measures in place to ensure our safety. I found it positive working in an environment where everyone was complying with restrictions whilst being supportive” the couple shared.

“People are a lot more conscious now regarding their personal safety and hygiene”

Overall, one thing the couple can confirm is that together, we can overcome the challenges presented by COVID19 if we work together and do our part to keep the NZ economy going.

“Be kind! No matter what your professional working background, its great seeing how people use their previous skills to help, adapt and pivot to achieve a common goal” Anna’s parting words of advice were.
